Saccades

Video

This artwork, produced in collaboration with the writer and artist Tom Mason, combines static text with an evolving narrative, challenging the viewer's perception through subtle transformations. Initially, it appears as a straightforward page of text, but as viewers read, the words they've already read begin to shift, unveiling new meanings if the reader rereads the text a second time.

Central to this piece is the concept of saccades, the rapid eye movements that occur as we scan lines of text. These movements are indicative of our limited visual focus, highlighting how our eyes capture only specific segments of text at a time. This physiological aspect enriches the artwork's dynamic, as the text changes in response to our fragmented visual attention.

The artwork's design merges traditional media with innovative technological elements, forming a unique intersection between the tangible and the intangible. It is more than a visual piece; it’s an exploration of perception and cognitive engagement.

You will need to press play and read the text twice to experience the work.
